SIOTA is a Program of the IOTA Chapter of Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc. and was incorporated on May 28, 2014. The organizing Board of Directors, members of Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority Inc., include Mrs. Ovella Queen, Dr. Ditra Scruggs, Mrs. Chanel Trussell, Ms. Lorretta Turnage, Ms. Joyce Sturgis, Ms. Dorothy Glasco-Jones and Mrs. Catherine DeFord.
The organizing Board of Directors saw a need and was determined to fill that need by forming a non-profit to develop and implement educational and health awareness programs, projects and scholarship opportunities for individuals pursuing degrees in the field of business, healthcare, STEM or education.
The formation of SIOTA was a labor of love for these business women. The women always knew the objectives, goals and purpose of the organization, however, It took over two years of commitment, dedication, sacrifice, meetings and brainstorming to develop the mission statement, present the concept and obtain approval from the IOTA Chapter of Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc., obtain the 501(c)(3) designation, form a Board of Directors and raise initial funds to carry out the mission.
It was important for SIOTA to obtain tax exempt status. As a 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Corporation, SIOTA can apply for grants reserved for tax exempt entities, solicit businesses and individuals for donations and contributions that are tax deductible for the giver, and all funds are used to carry out SIOTA’s mission.
Since obtaining the 501(c)(3) status, SIOTA has been actively applying for grants and soliciting contributions and donations. As a result, SIOTA has been able to sponsor after school programs to educate and provide healthy meals for elementary and middle school students, sponsor youth groups attending college tours and youth assembly events, provide education tools to students, to include, basic tools such as pens, pencils and notebooks to elementary students, to electronic tools such as computers to high school seniors on their way to colleges.
